Melvin Williams Jr. was the first African American to make chief as an Aviation Survivalman and then as a Chief Warrant Officer.

The two leading ships of the 210-foot Reliance-class cutters, Coast Guard cutters Reliance and Diligence, will turn 60 years old in June and August of this year, respectively.

The World War II Beach Patrol in Jacksonville Beach

Coast Guard Headquarters authorized the institution of beach patrols in all areas adjacent to the coast. The patrol members came to be known colloquially as “sand pounders.” By August of 1942, the first patrols with dogs were instituted.

The Coast Guard War Memorial represents valor, bravery, and ultimate sacrifice during a war unlike any other time. Lest we forget these men, the Coast Guard carries on its missions in their memory.

The Long Blue Line: William Trump — Coast Guard hero of D-Day

The Coast Guard-manned LCI(L)s, or landing crafts, were 158-feet long and 23-feet wide and were the smallest sea-going amphibious crafts involved in the invasion.

Hitting the New England coast 85 years ago, the Great New England Hurricane was one of the most destructive storms to strike anywhere in the United States up to that time. Also known as the “Yankee Clipper” and “Long Island Express,” the 1938 hurricane caused over $41 billion in property damage and the death of approximately 700 men, women, and children.
