U.S. Coast Guard members from around the national capital region gathered at the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Washington, D.C., to help retirees celebrate the Coast Guard's 223rd birthday, Aug. 2, 2013. Established in 1851, AFRH Washington has been home to thousands of former enlisted military members and recently opened its doors to retired Coast Guard members as well. U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer 1st Class Andres Murtillo enters the water Feb. 1, 2020, during a scuba dive about seven miles north of McMurdo Station, Antarctica. Scuba divers from the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Army and the Royal Canadian Navy are serving aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star (WAGB-10) in order to effect emergency repairs if needed to the 44-year-old heavy icebreaker.
