Introducing the Civil Engineering Qualification Insignia

By Lt. Cmdr. Cory Fagan

The Civil Engineering Program is excited to introduce the new Civil Engineering Qualification Insignia, which recognizes expertise in shore facility engineering, construction, and management. This new Insignia fosters esprit-de-corps and highlights the critical role the Civil Engineering Program plays in supporting Coast Guard missions and operations.

The Civil Engineering Insignia represents the many different roles within the Civil Engineering community that safeguard and maintain the Coast Guard’s shore infrastructure. Since every mission begins and ends at a shore facility, the Civil Engineering Program is key to mission success.

Insignia Design

The Insignia design reflects the collaboration between many multidisciplinary engineers and specialists throughout the program. It features the Civil Engineering Program’s distinguished shield, along with a historical theodolite, all encircled by the imagery of construction equipment in operation. The bulldozers are symbolic of the unrivaled strength, determination and professionalism of the Program’s workforce. The kinetic energy depicted in the Insignia suggests the fluidity of soil akin to the crashing waves of the sea, representing the dynamic missions that the Civil Engineering Program tirelessly supports.

The gold garnished insignia represents our distinguished commitment to excellence underscored by the dedicated and varied workforce fulfilling the range of Civil Engineering missions.

Who Can Earn the Insignia?

Coast Guard officers, civilians, enlisted, and reserve members, who meet the qualifications are eligible to earn and wear the Civil Engineering Insignia.

Permanent Entitlement

Requirements for the Insignia will be detailed in an updated COMDTINST.

  • Officers in the Civil Engineering Program must meet the CEN-10 Officer Specialty Code requirements for Journeyman. Once they achieve Journeyman status, they will earn the Civil Engineer Insignia.
  • Materiel (MAT) Warrant Officers (CWOs) and enlisted members in the Civil Engineering Program will have several pathways to obtain the Insignia.
  • Civilian employees in the General Schedule and Wage Grade categories within the Civil Engineering Program will also have multiple pathways to earn the Insignia.
