The Coast Guard is taking new steps to improve talent recruitment and retention by increasing Blended Retirement Systems (BRS) Continuation Pay (CP) and providing CP earlier in members’ careers.
The new policy, which takes effect on Jan. 1, 2025, increased CP multipliers dramatically and allows members to collect CP earlier in their careers. Under the previous policy, CP was offered to members who reached 12 years of service. Now, members who have reached eight years of service can collect the below CP amounts:
- Enlisted members: 9 times monthly basic pay
- Officers: 6 times monthly basic pay
- Reservists: 2 times monthly basic pay
As a reminder, the Pay and Personnel Center (PPC) will notify members of their eligibility to receive CP approximately 180 days before reaching eight years of service. Upon notification, members must return their signed CP election form CG-7430A and have the form witnessed by their commanding officer or command designee at least 30 days before their CP date. Members who do not return the election form prior to their CP date will forfeit their eligibility. A member’s CP date is defined as the date eight years from the member’s Pay Entry Base Date (PEBD) as indicated on their pay slip within Direct Access.
Members may reverse their decision to receive CP—and their obligation to complete four more years of service—as long as they do so at least 30 days before their CP date. Any member who does not fulfill the service obligation is subject to full or partial CP repayment.
Education is essential to the financial success of service members, and resources for BRS education are available and listed in the ALCOAST.
