The Hackathon is back: Vote for your favorite Coast Guard deck plate developer app

By Kathy Murray, Senior Writer, MyCG

The Coast Guard will be reprising its own version of Shark Tank this Friday, Dec. 6, from 10 a.m. to noon EST, when members present six time-saving apps they created for the service at the virtual Deck Plate Developers- Power Platform Hackathon.

Everyone is in invited and you can tune in to the Teams event here!

The event is a follow-up to the original Deck Plate Developers challenge held last March when 10 finalists competed. This time around, six members have created apps designed to streamline everything from TQMS and order processing to memo writing and managing awards. They will present their apps to Rear Adm. Chad Jacoby, assistant commandant for acquisition and chief acquisition officer; SES Brian Campo; RFMC Ky McElrath; a panel of experts, and the viewers. This Live event will be interactive and allow you, the audience, to vote on your favorite application.

The apps were selected from recent submissions to an ongoing Innovation Challenge in CG_Ideas@Work.  The task was to develop a small-scale application that helps Coast Guard members increase productivity, better carry out their duties, or achieve mission success. These μApps  or "micro-apps" needed to be put together using existing Low Code Application Platforms (LCAP) and other readily available technologies.  The idea is to demonstrate how significant improvements can be accomplished without lengthy software development timelines and expensive contracts by harnessing the ingenuity of the workforce.

The deck plate developers used Microsoft Power Platform Applications available on Pixel Dashboard to create the apps. Judges will evaluate the projects based upon potential impact and benefit to the workforce.

The full list of apps to be presented is included below:

  1. TQMS Idea

  • The Power Platform was used to develop an app for filtering and visualizing the Education and Training Quota Management Command (ETQC) C schools, integrating the course application process, and automating the submission of requests to supervisors and Training Officer/ICS Coordinator for streamlined entry.

  1. Memo Writing App - Demo Video Included

  • This memo-generating app is designed to simplify the formatting process by providing the user with form fields that are customized through user input, as well as tool tips that explain the purpose and proper formatting for each field.

  1. ARIA-C (Always wRite Intelligent Awards and Correspondence)

  • This tool will help you manage all the awards and correspondence in one place. Create, share, route, and store everything in a single location.

  1. Industrial Management App

  • An app to simplify industrial service order processing and management that improves CG wide customer experience, expedites maintenance and repair projects, and facilitates data collection to determine the best utilization of organic resources.

  1. The Ultimate Correspondence and Awards App

  • Promises to transform your relationship with correspondence and awards through a highly automated and intuitive solution that streamlines generation and processing of these important documents for every routing chain across the enterprise.

  1. Streamlined TQMS Process

  • App promises a cradle-to-grave process to modernize training requests that offers security, transparency, and hassle-free notifications.

So why not drop by the virtual hackathon on Friday.  Who knows? You could find your colleagues have made your job easier to do!
