October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), a time where the nation and Coast Guard celebrate the contributions and achievements of workers with disabilities. The Coast Guard supports inclusive employment practices, including ensuring our members have the tools, proper accommodations, support, and opportunities necessary to succeed.
This year's theme, "Access to Good Jobs for All," emphasizes the importance of ensuring workers with disabilities have access to jobs. Currently, over 30% of the Coast Guard's civilian workforce identifies as having a disability. Their unique talents, adaptability, and resourcefulness not only contribute to mission success but also enrich our collective service culture. By offering opportunities for career development and advancement, fostering supportive work environments, and employing inclusive strategies to recruit and retain capable workers with disabilities, the Coast Guard continues to be a model employer for those with disabilities.
NDEAM reminds us of the importance of workplace accessibility and equity. This is an opportunity to promote understanding of disability employment issues, and the challenges faced by workers with disabilities. When we prioritize access, we create a culture of understanding and respect that benefits everyone. As a Service, we are committed to ensuring access to jobs for all and creating an environment where everyone can reach their full potential.
