Coast Guard releases guidance for FY 2024 Special Leave Accrual (SLA)

By Kathy Murray, Senior Writer, MyCG

The Coast Guard has announced the operational missions which will qualify as duty for special leave accrual (SLA) for FY 24. These include:

  • Operation Vigilant Sentry
  • CENTCOM Operations
  • Francis Scott Key Bridge Response Operations
  • Lahaina Wildfire Response Operations

The SLA program allows service members to carry over more than the 60-day maximum leave from one fiscal year to the next when an extraordinary situation prevents them from taking the leave.  This means circumstances caused by a catastrophe, national emergency, or crisis, or due to operations in defense of national security.

Qualifying members may accumulate up to 90 days of leave with approval at the end of FY2024.

To qualify, you must be away from homeport/your Permanent Duty Station for 60 or more consecutive days on one of these designated missions above. In addition, service members who are on active duty for a continuous period of at least 120 days in a hostile fire/imminent danger area or assigned to a designated deployable ship, mobile unit, or other similar prescribed duty for more than 60 days can also claim SLA.

Procedures to request SLA can be found in the Personnel & Pay Procedures Manual, PPCINST M1000 REF (C) Chapter 6 Q.  All carryover requests for FY24 SLA must be submitted by Dec. 1, 2024.
