Veteran Ventures Program empowers Coast Guard members for business success

By MyCG Staff

The Veteran Ventures Program (VVP), a pioneering initiative by Centenary University, is set to launch its Fall 2024 program, providing vital entrepreneurship training to the Coast Guard workforce. This program is designed to support veterans from all branches of service and their families in developing successful business ventures.

The VVP is a nine-week, no-cost entrepreneurship training program that includes ten months of subsequent business coaching. Participants engage in interactive online training sessions, hands-on clinics, and workshops led by credentialed consultants. The program also guides participants through conducting feasibility studies and developing comprehensive business plans, culminating in presentations to potential investors.

Applications for Fall 2024 are open to Coast Guard active-duty members, reservists, veterans, retirees, and their family members, as well as civilian employees who can commit to the entire program. Interested individuals must apply by Sept. 10, 2024. To apply, prospective participants should complete an information request form available on the VVP website. After submitting the form, applicants will be contacted with further details regarding the application process and interview requirements.

Past Coast Guard participants have praised the program for its clarity, mentorship, and comprehensive training. Anissia Cole, a Regional Education Services Officer, highlighted the program’s focus on the LEAN business model and its effectiveness in building confidence and strategic thinking.

“This program has equipped me with the knowledge and skills necessary to learn and launch a business, providing valuable insights into the five principles of the LEAN business model,” said Cole.  “As a prospective business owner, I am confident in my ability to succeed.”

Lt. Cmdr. Jim Fasoli, FC-CI's Military to Mariner (M2M) Program manager, emphasized the value of learning from accomplished business professionals and the program's role in addressing personal “blind spots” and business planning.

“The instructors were awesome,” said Fasoli.  “All of them were accomplished business people in their respective fields, and it was a great opportunity to learn from their experiences. The program required attendance in a three hour class once a week, a meeting with the individually assigned coach once a week, homework assignments, and several presentations to the cohort.”

Maj. George W. Paffendorf, KCA, U.S. Army, retired, Executive Director of Special Initiatives at Centenary University, commented on the program's unique value.

“Centenary University has a reputation for outstanding business programs as well as an extensive menu of offerings designed to support veterans furthering their education and careers,” said Paffendorf. “We are proud to offer this free program to veterans, who have given so much for our country. A cornerstone of the Veteran Ventures Program is the University’s partnership with business leaders whose insight and experience are invaluable to veterans seeking to start a business.”

The Veteran Ventures program offers a unique opportunity for the Coast Guard community to acquire entrepreneurial skills and launch successful businesses. By participating in this program, members can access the extensive resources and expertise provided by Centenary University, setting the stage for future success in the business world.
