Coast Guard to direct slate members to Chiefs’ Academy

By AJ Pulkkinen, MyCG writer

For the FY25 training year, the Office of Leadership and the Education and Quota Management Center (ETQC) will issue orders to active-duty members who have not yet attended Chief Petty Officer Academy (CPOACAD). Members will be selected based on priority. Preliminary notifications to prospective attendees will go out in August and early September. Orders for the October and November convenings will be sent in September.

Although CPOACAD is a required training for any member filling an E-7 and above enlisted billet, over 40% of E-7s – more than 1,500 Chiefs – have not yet completed it.

“While the Office of Leadership, FORCECOM, and the Chiefs’ Academy work to address this problem, it is paramount that the newest chiefs be prioritized so that this backlog does not increase,” said Senior Chief Petty Officer Joe Hoff, the Coast Guard’s Enlisted Professional Development Program Manager. “With this priority system and direct slating, we will take advantage of every seat we have and give the best training possible to those who need it.”

The Active Duty Priorities are:

  • Members above the cut for E-8 on the 2023 SWE Advancement Eligibility List
  • Members recently advanced to E-7*
  • Members above the cut for E-7 or E-8 from the 2024 SWE Advancement Eligibility List
  • Members E-7 by the date of their ETR**

*Priority 2: For classes in FY25, seats will be filled with the most recently advanced Chiefs starting with the August EPAA and working backwards (i.e. July, June, May). As each new EPAA is published, members needing CPOACAD will be included in this priority.

**Priority 4: E-7 members who have not yet attended CPOACAD and are not above a cut on either the 2023 or 2024 SWE Advancement Eligibility List need to submit an ETR.

Members who have not yet attended CPOACAD may take a SWE to compete for advancement to E-8 but must complete CPOACAD in order to affect E-8 advancement. The requirement to have completed CPOACAD to advance to E-7 remains suspended and no waivers are needed.

The transition from E-6 to E-7 is critical for a chief and is one of the most difficult transitions they will make in their career. CPOACAD provides students with the skills, knowledge, and attitude to make this transition as smoothly and effectively as possible, setting them up for success from the very beginning. The innovative curriculum is designed to take newly advanced Chief Petty Officers (E-7) and transition them from technical experts to organizational leaders.

Graduates are ready to become the Coast Guard's Chief Petty Officer Corps: the backbone of the enlisted workforce.

Members who want to cancel their orders to CPOACAD must route their cancellation request through their respective Gold Badge and first Flag Officer for concurrence.

Reserve CPOACAD quota priorities have not changed. Please continue to submit Electronic Training Requests (ETR) which will be allocated by date of ETR.
