The Coast Guard is honoring Vietnam War Veterans Day, March 29, which is the day the Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017 established to honor these veterans. The date was chosen for its historical significance; it was the day United States Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV) was disbanded, and the day the last American combat troops left Vietnam. Additionally, around this time of year Vietnam released the last acknowledged prisoners of war (POWs).
This year, the United States government will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the conclusion of the Vietnam War by honoring and thanking veterans from May 11-13 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. entitled, Welcome Home! A Nation Honors our Vietnam Veterans and their Families. Americans will come together to thank Vietnam War veterans and celebrate their enduring legacy.
The events will include special exhibits, scheduled activities, and performances by military musical units, and a multimedia celebration. For more information about the event, please see the Vietnam War Commemoration’s (VWC’s) website.
