Share your New Year’s watch log entry with MyCG!

By Zach Shapiro, MyCG Writer

Calling all Coast Guard poets! Here’s your chance to show off your haiku, free verse, or limerick chops. MyCG is  hosting the annual New Year’s watch log entry series and will publish an anthology of the best submissions from across the service. Please send your watch log poem to MyCG@uscg.mil.

In the Coast Guard and other seafaring services, writing the Jan. 1 watch log entry in poem form is a storied tradition. For one day a year, poems take place of the standard watch entry format.

The watch log is the official record of events during the watch and is the responsibility of the officer of the day or watch stander of each unit. Log entries are brief and are required by law to be maintained as federal records and stored by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA).

Start your 2023 off creatively! Channel your inner poet and submit your New Year’s watch log by Jan. 3, 2023. Please include unit information, author’s name, and rank with your submission.
