Workforce Planning Team will meet to help improve recruitment and retention

By Nicole Bertrand, MyCG Staff

Assistant commandants facing personnel challenges can apply to the Workforce Planning Team (WPT) for monetary and non-monetary help between now and April 1, 2022. The team was formed to assist in the recruitment and retention of the best talent in the Coast Guard and will be evaluating strategies to achieve that in upcoming meetings.

The comprehensive review of intervention strategies—methods to improve current practices—is deemed necessary to maintain a ready, relevant, and responsive Coast Guard capable of managing America’s most complex maritime challenges.

Chartered in 2018, the WPT meets annually and consists of the Military Workforce Planning Team (MWPT) for both active duty and reserve personnel and the Civilian Workforce Planning Team (CWPT). The MWPT and CWPT include all of headquarters and personnel from Pacific Area and Atlantic Area.

"The WPT has matured over the last few years, and we are excited to kick off another season,” said Rear Adm. Eric Jones, assistant commandant for Human Resources. “As we work to close gaps in retention and recruitment, the WPT is an excellent avenue for submitting workforce interventions."

To identify the best solutions, whether monetary or non-monetary, the WPT adopts a holistic approach to address varying workforce concerns using sub-groups, studies, analytics, and business cases to determine the highest priority needs and the best application of base resources.

Some examples of non-monetary interventions include policy changes and direct or guaranteed A-school. Monetary interventions might include bonuses as incentives to take on arduous duties or accept less-desirable jobs.

Anyone planning to submit a non-monetary and/or a monetary intervention request must be familiar with and adhere to the guidance and requirements in the updated and signed WPT Charter located here.

Submissions received after April 1, 2022, will not be accepted. If you do not see your intervention request in the relevant section of the COMDT (CG-1R) WPT portal page by April 12, 2022, email to confirm receipt.

Approval of the interventions for implementation will occur after the third quarter CWPT/MWPT meetings. The CWPT/MWPT meetings will convene between January through August 2022. Final dates will be sent to CWPT and MWPT Guidance Team members and CWPT and MWPT Voting and Advisory panel members. Meeting details will be sent seven to 14 days prior to the convening to inform each WPT of their specific meeting dates and proposed agenda.
