Senior Chief Petty Officer Malia Casteen is incredible! She recently hosted Admiral Karl Schultz, Dawn, Amy and I (Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard Jason Vanderhaden) for a visit to Station Maui a few weeks back. We were able to recognize some of her outstanding crew members for their hard work and significant contributions to the unit and the CoastGuard. There is a “whole team” effort at U.S. Coast Guard Station Maui, which makes it a great environment to be at.
Chasteen encourages the members at the unit to be their best version of themselves both personally and professionally and together we look for opportunities for growth and improvement. Chasteen is an active member of the Greater Hawaiian Islands Chief Mess and the Chief Petty Officer’s Association (CPOA). Most recently participating in an organized CPOA, Chiefs mess, and Sector Armory sponsored event at Sector Honolulu, which saw over 60 volunteers across all the tenant commands cleaning for the “adopt a-highway” program. Casteen is also an organizer for the Base Honolulu’s 2021 Captain’s cup, with participating units from all over the greater Hawaiian Islands, including the outlying units of Kauai and Maui. Chasteen is a Coast Guard change agent, a member of the Coast Guard’s Diversity and Inclusion Education and Awareness Program, both a facilitator and a coach. Additionally, Chasteen is a member of the Coast Guard mentoring program, both a mentee and a mentor.
Bravo Zulu and THANK YOU for your leadership!
“Find a mentor. When you get that mentor, reach behind you, and grab somebody else to help them up.” Senior Chief Petty Officer Malia Chasteen.
