Our Deckplate Leader of the Week is Chief Petty Officer Matt Bialas!
Bialas currently serves as the executive petty officer (XPO) of Station New Haven co-located at U.S. Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound on the Connecticut coastline. We recently welcomed Bialas to the Mess as he nears the end of his tour and prepares for his next assignment this summer as a Recruiter in Charge.
Bialas is a very calm and steady presence at his unit and in the Mess. He always has his crew's back, and he keeps his officer in charge (OIC) out of trouble, which is not always an easy task. We wish him the very best as a recruiter, and we trust him to bring us the best and brightest folks for the next generation of our service.
Lead by example. Empower your crew – give them the tools necessary to complete a task, but allow freedom for creative thoughts. Accountability – hold each other accountable, but most importantly, hold yourself accountable. Develop the future leaders of the Coast Guard - always offer opportunities for personal and professional growth, these members will be relieving us, and are the future of the Coast Guard.
What advice do you have for junior members?
