Fourth Class Year wins big in Coast Guard Academy’s Women’s Air Pistol Championship: Fourth Class Year Sarah Choe recently won the Women’s Air Pistol championship with 556 points. Choe’s win marks the sixth straight season that Coast Guard has won the event. Choe earned the gold medal for her win in the Women’s Air Pistol, bronze in the Individual Women’s Sport Pistol, and silver in the Women’s Individual Aggregate. Bravo Zulu Fourth Class Year Sarah Choe!

Three members receive the Coast Guard Academy’s Spirit of the Bear Award: Command Master Chief Brett VerHulst, Lt. Derek Petty, and Coach Glenn Florio (posthumous) received the Coast Guard Academy’s Spirit of the Bear award March 18, 2021. The award is named for the Academy's mascot and recognizes members of the academy community who exemplify the very best in mentoring and developing cadets into leaders of character. This year’s recipients were no different. Congratulations to all of the award winners!

Team helps vaccinate some of the Eighth District’s hardest to reach: Base New Orleans’ Regional Practice Manager Lt. Ernest Callahan coordinated with the Basic Clinic, Aviation Training Center Mobile, and Air Station New Orleans to deliver COVID-19 vaccines via helicopter to units located in the upper Mississippi River. The four-person team to include Callahan, Cmdr. Andy Greenwood, and Petty Officers 2nd Class Cody Childress and Casey Zachry,  vaccinated 72 members from river buoy tenders Coast Guard Cutters Scioto, Gasconade, and Wyaconda; Marine Safety Detachment Peoria; Marine Safety Detachment Quad City; Station Port O’Connor; and Marine Safety Detachment Victoria. Innovation Council briefs CGA cadets on becoming agents of change: The Innovation Council gave a first-of-its-kind briefing on the Coast Guard Research, Development, Test & Evaluation (RDT&E) and Innovation to Coast Guard Academy’s Class of 2021 cadets March 23, 2021. The briefing covered the current initiatives being discussed by the Innovation Council, the ways the cadets could get involved, and how they can become agents of change within the Coast Guard.
