Sector Sault Saint Marie, Michigan is: A small sector with a big responsibility.
What we do: We oversee seven full-time and two seasonal small boat stations, as well as two aids to navigation teams and Marine Safety Unit Duluth, Minnesota. Our vast and complex area of responsibility spans three states and an international border. We manage the largest domestic ice breaking operation in the country and carry out all 11 Coast Guard missions. We are powered by people who are proud to stand the watch over the Northern Great Lakes.
When not on watch: Our workforce enjoys some of the most beautiful and untouched land in the continental United States. They hike, bike, kayak, hunt, ski, fish, and snowmobile in the rugged forests, lakes and dunes that characterize the area.
One of the best kept secrets: Is our vicinity to pristine vacation spots in the United States and the easy access to Canada. Stationed amongst famous landmarks and National Parks including Mackinac Island, the Soo Locks, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, and Isle Royale our crew and their families take advantage of the incredible work-life balance and four-season adventures found here.
