New Shipmate Form will help you welcome incoming members

The U.S. Coast Guard has a new tool to help commands get to know newly arrived members.

It’s called the “New Shipmate Form” and is intended for all active duty, reserve, civilian and auxiliary members who are transitioning to a new command or position.

The form, shown here, asks get-to-know-you type questions about a member’s interests, goals, preferences, family and more. The goal is to help create a welcoming environment and a sense of inclusion for members new to the unit or area.

Small things like pronouncing someone’s name correctly can go a long way in making the transition more comfortable.

The Assistant Commandant for Human Resources (CG-1) partnered with several Coast Guard affinity groups that highlight diversity and inclusion to develop this form.

“This builds on existing tools like the unit sponsor program to ensure our members feel seen, valued and welcome,” said Master Chief Petty Officer Phil Payne, CG-1’s Command Master Chief. “If nothing else, this can be a conversation starter between the command and new personnel to help close some communication gaps when there aren’t other opportunities to start discussions upon arrival.”

Completing the form is voluntary but highly encouraged for all members of the workforce!
