Coast Guard Announces Outlook to Combat Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing

Do you know how the seafood you eat is caught? It’s possible the fish you buy came from an illegal fishing haul. It’s estimated that one in five fish in an industry with a sales value of over $400 billion are brought to market through unlawful methods. Fishing communities subject to the standards that promote good governance of resources are disadvantaged when illegally caught fish enter the market.   

The Commandant has announced a plan to combat the multi-billion dollar international black market in fishing, pursuing new efforts and international partnerships to combat economically and environmentally unsustainable fishing practices.

Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Isa Mariano discusses her experience helping a woman who was contemplating suicide from the Golden Gate Bridge, mid-June 2020. Mariano talked with the woman, called her loved ones and with the help of a good Samaritan, brought the woman away from the ledge before bridge authorities arrived on scene to safely escort the woman from Golden Gate.

Reserves: Additional training period allocations for SELRES members for fiscal year 2021

For the upcoming fiscal year, reservists are reminded that only select reserve (SELRES) members assigned to Port Security Units (PSU), Naval Coastal Riverine Squadrons (CORIVRON) and Naval Coastal Riverine Groups (CORIVGRU) are authorized to perform additional training period (ATP).

Microsoft 365 arrives at the Coast Guard

By the end of October, all Coast Guard workforce members –active duty, civilians, and reservists – will have a new email account through Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365). While emails will not turn off unexpectedly, there are some important changes to keep in mind as this transition begins.
